Description
Azure Hearthstone’s delicious sourdough bread is baked right here in Dufur, Oregon in our Azure bakery and offers several scientifically supported health benefits due to its unique fermentation process using wild yeast and lactic acid bacteria (LAB). These benefits include improved digestion, enhanced mineral absorption, and support for gut health, making it a potentially healthier alternative to conventional breads.
- Supports Healthy Digestion: The fermentation process breaks down complex carbohydrates and gluten, reducing compounds that can cause bloating and discomfort, and may make sourdough easier to digest, especially for those with mild gluten sensitivities.
- Improves Mineral Absorption: Fermentation reduces phytic acid, a compound that binds to minerals like iron, zinc, and magnesium, thereby increasing their bioavailability and enhancing nutrient uptake.
- May Support Gut Health: Although not a probiotic (as baking kills live bacteria), sourdough is rich in postbiotics—beneficial compounds like lactic acid and short-chain fatty acids—that support a balanced gut microbiome and may reduce inflammation.
- Enhances Satiety and Weight Management: The formation of resistant starch during cooling after baking slows digestion and promotes feelings of fullness, potentially aiding in healthy weight management.
- Natural Preservation and Reduced Additives: The natural acidity from fermentation inhibits mold and bacterial growth, allowing sourdough to have a longer shelf life without synthetic preservatives.
- Rich in Nutrients: Sourdough provides essential nutrients such as fiber, protein, iron, selenium, and folate, with whole-grain varieties offering additional heart-healthy benefits.
To thaw frozen sourdough bread, remove it from the freezer and let it sit at room temperature for 2–4 hours, depending on the size of the loaf. For best results, place it on a cutting board or in a bread box to prevent condensation buildup.
For a warm, fresh-like texture, refresh the loaf in the oven: preheat to 350°F (175°C), sprinkle with water, and bake for 10–15 minutes.
Slicing before freezing allows you to thaw only what you need.
Directions
To reheat frozen prebaked sourdough
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- After thawing, quickly run the crust under cool water to moisten it.
- Place the loaf on a baking sheet or directly on the oven rack.
- Bake for 10–15 minutes, or until the crust is crisp and the interior is warm.
- For individual slices, toast them in a toaster or toaster oven, or warm them in a lightly buttered skillet on the stovetop.
